Instructions for patients before the urine tests/urine culture colony counts

The following are important instructions for the preparation of urine for test. Please read the instructions carefully and follow them strictly. An improperly taken sample, dirty or non-sterile sample, may result in false tests.

Instructions for women

  • Wash your hands with water and soap (liquid soap) thoroughly.
  • Wash your perineal area with a small quantity of soap and water and rinse thoroughly with running water.
  • Pass the first urine into the toilet, and the next stream into the sterile container.

Instructions for men

  • Wash your hands with water and soap (liquid soap) thoroughly.
  • Pull up your foreskin and wash the external urethral orifice with a small quantity of soap and water rinse thoroughly with running water.
  • Pass the first urine into the toilet, and the next stream into the sterile container.

Instructions for children and babies

  • If taking your child’s urine in the way described above is impossible, urine should be collected in a sterile collection bag – after washing your child with a small quantity of soap (liquid soap) and water and rinsing it thoroughly with running water.
  • The collection bag should be stuck to dry skin right before the expected passing of urine, pulled off right after passing the urine and delivered for testing.
  • The collection bag may remain stuck for no longer than 30 minutes. If the child fails to pass urine during that time, you should use another collection bag.
  • The direct passing of urine into a container (without the collection bag) is particularly recommended for urine culture colony counts.

Urine culture colony counts

  • In a sterile container without a dip slide – should be delivered immediately (longer storage requires the temperature of ca. 4ºC).
  • In a dip-slide container – should be stored in room temperature.
  • If the urine test and urine culture colony count is done simultaneously, please deliver urine in one sterile container – without the dip slide.

COMMENTS

  • Before passing urine for urine culture colony counts, the external urethral orifice should not be dried!
  • The use of wet wipes before taking urine samples does not replace water and soap. Failure to obey the hygiene standards causes the urine sample to become contaminated, and makes tests unreliable.
  • Urine from the potty is unsuitable for testing.
  • Urine for urine test should be delivered within 2 hours after taking the sample.
